The large sail area possible on a low mast reduces the heeling movement of the boat (tendency to tip) without sacrificing performance. This rig is fast and easy to set up. The free-standing mast requires no stays or wires and simply lifts out to stow within the boat. The mainsail on this standing lug style rig can be tacked across in full control using only the mainsheet. Reefing gear is standard and the mainsail can be reefed while out on the water.
With the sailing gear and fixed seats removed, the optional silde seat sculling gear can be installed, turning the boat into a double position “all water” scull. See the Slide Seat Whitehall 17 model.
This model features built-in buoyancy forward and aft, and is shown here with the optional removable solid teak floorboard system. An “Ocean Tender Floor” is available as well, which adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy (an important safety feature) to the boat, perfect for when the boat is used as a ship’s tender or shoreboat.
This model is also available as an expedition model, which features all of the available options including the slide seat sculling gear.
